The Annual meeting of the Association was held at Church House, South Tawton on the 5th March 2010 under the Chairmanship of Brian Drake.
The secretary Geoff Baker gave details of the successful 2009 competition at Okehampton. He then announced that he was standing down due to work and health reasions. He took the job on for one year and then did seven very successful years as secretary. We are all very sorry to see him go.
Julia Endacott gave the treasurers report. After giving out grants in 2009 totaling £200 and having the trophies refurbished the funds were depleted, but sufficient to offer Sourton £30 to help get there bells ringing again.
Brian Drake then gave his report and announced that after many years as Chairman he was also standing down. He has been an active member of the association since its inauguration.
The new Chairman is Chris Clayton, Sampford Courtenay. The Secretary who was appointed in her absence is Karen Squire, Honeychurch. The Treasurer stays the same, Julia Endacott, Chagford.
The 2010 competition is to be held at Chagford on Saturday June 5th.
Before its close, the meeting welcomed Lydford to the Okehampton Deanery and thanked Brian for his many years as Chairman of the Association.

MikePippa Quelch, a BBC Radio Devon presenter went along to South Brent and was speaking to Graham Sharland.
There was a mention of bells being featured in her programme, every Sunday, at about 07:55
This appears to be a campaign by BBC Radio Devon to feature bell ringing with the aim of raising our profile to encourage more people to take up church bell ringing.
The interview with Graham Sharland can be heard again at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p006k9m8/Good_Morning_Devon_28_02_2010/
and it is about 1 hour and 43 mins into the programme.

I've been given notice of a 10 bell call change competition being held at Hexham Abbey, Northumberland in July through Facebook. Assuming that most people in Devon haven't had this information, I'm posting the details here so that if there is anyone who wants the trip up country they have the details. Please don't contact me regarding this, as I am only passing on the information!
"Event: Hexham Abbey Challenge "A call change striking contest on 10 bells" What: Tournament Start Time: 03 July at 13:00 End Time: 03 July at 18:30 Where: Hexham Abbey, Northumberland, UK
This contest is intended to promote striking accuracy on 10 bells while
still being accessible to a wide cross-section of ringers. The rules
don't require teams to represent towers or associations, although they
can do if they wish to. The contest is held every other year. Hexham
Abbey's A team won in 2008. If Hexham is within reach, why not enter a
team? Entries to john[dot]snook1[at]btinternet[dot]com"

MikeSubject: Call Changes Ringers in North Oxon?
David Puckey has written an email to us and asks if any person knows of any Devon/Cornwall call change ringers who now reside in or near north Oxon around Bicester and Banbury area?
David rings regularly at his local tower who are very friendly and very much method and open hand leads. David says he thinks it would be rather fun if there were some other change ringers within range to do some Devon Call Change ringing.
In his area, changes are generally seen as a stepping stone to method ringing. He says that the practices are very welcoming and the ringers are happy to accommodate visitors whatever they ring however from his point of view any chance to ring some Devon call changes would be brilliant.
Please feel free to contact David on the address below if you know of any call changes ringers who have moved to the North Oxon area.
Please subsitute the symbols for words in brackets.

Ryan New year new start for Plymouth & Ivybridge Deanery! The AGM was held in December 2009 at the Parish church of All Saints, Plymstock. One of the best attendances for a long time saw no fewer than 16 out of 18 towers being represented! In recent years our Deanery has seen a large downfall in towers being represented but we do hope that the future is becoming a little brighter now. The members that were present at the AGM also voted for a change of stewardship. Our past secretary Liz Price who unfortunately became ill stood down and Neil Trout who is captain of the towers at Shaugh Prior and Bickleigh has been appointed in her place. Also there was a change of chairman and this passed from Calvin Roberts of Wembury to Paul Treby of Plymstock, we wish the both of them good luck for the future. It was also the turn of the Plymouth & Ivybridge Deanery to host the South Devon Ringers Association Inter Deanery competition for 2010, two towers came forward to hold this event, the first being Ermington and the reserve tower being Wembury. Ermington are very keen as a band and we wish them the best of luck in holding this event. At the the AGM we also ask for towers to come forward to host our deanery event which is held on the 1st Saturday in June, this year it will be held for the first time at St Mary the Virgin, Laira, this peal of 8 bells was cast by whitechapel in 2000 and were dedicated in 2001, the deanery will be using the back 6 bells on the day, the tenor weigh's 11-0-14 in G. In other news from our area, we heard that the beautiful Taylor Octave at Plympton St Maurice were out of action due to an accident that occurred during a peal on the bells from a visiting band. They had forgotten to pull the clock hammers off and this caused severe damage to the clock hammers and to one part of the frame, the project to restore and repair the above has been undertaken by Andrew Nicholson and the bells should be available for ringing again within the next month to 6 weeks.

After two years of fundraising and work by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, the bells of St Andrew, Sampford Courtenay are back ringing again.
A group of ringers from around Devon, Scott Adams, Steve Herniman, Merv Langdon, Andrew Gist, Paul Wright and three locals. Joe Stoneman, Karen Squire and myself Chris Clayton, tried them out in the presence of the two Whitechapel Bell Hangers.
Even though the new ropes, which had only gone up that morning, had a very slight "give". The first rise and peal were very good indeed. The ringers all expressed them selves very satisfied with the bells rung at that and subsequent times during the evening.
I would like to express my appreciation to Whitechapel for the foundry work and the two gentlemen who actually did the hanging, for a superb example of the bell hanging art. Not easy with old bells in an old frame.
The total cost of the hanging and associated works is £52,000. All but a few hundred pounds of this sum has been raised.
There will be a Re-dedication of the bells by the Bishop of Exeter, on Sunday June the 13th, with a service starting at 11am.
Ringing will now resume its normal patten, practice on Tuesday and for Sunday Service.
Chris Clayton.

RyanI am pleased to announce some news in relation to a number of towers within the Association and the nearby Truro Diocese.
News has come to light regarding the re-hanging of the bells at Atherington in North Devon, this project has been ongoing since late 2004 early 2005 but i am pleased to inform you that the bells have now been re-hung! They cannot however be rung until at least July 2010, this is to give the tower time to settle down and dry out, taylor's of loughborough have carried out the work.
Also in the North of the County Sampford Courtenay bells are now back and are actually being installed this week by Whitechapel. They should be ringing again within the next 2 to 3 weeks.
News from the Truro Guild is that Pillaton near Saltash in Cornwall have now been successfully augmented to 8 by Whites of Appleton and have been retuned by Whitechapel, The Tenor now weighs 10-1-27 in F# and no longer 12-0-8 in G.

boveybobI found the following obituary in the Guardian, http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguardian/2010/jan/25/dom-paulinus-obituary which is very sad news as he was the last link to the original founders of the current Abbey and the ringing monks at Buckfast.
