Stoke Canon bells finally ringable again
After 4 years of silence the bells of Stoke Canon are now finally ringable again.
After a lengthy resoration project which included replacing the original treble and 5th bells and re-casting the original 2nd with new ones cast by The Whitechapel Bell Foundry.
During the restoration it was also found that the 3rd bell, which was of poor tone, needed to be replaced and a bell was found via the Keltek Trust. The new 3rd bell for Stoke Canon originally formed part of a chime of 8 at St Mary, Highfield Street in Liverpool, the bell was cast by John Taylor & Co of Loughborough in 1952.
The bells of Stoke Canon
Treble: 4-0-6 in E
Second: 4-1-16 in D
Third: 5-1-25 in C
Fourth: 6-0-7 in B
Fifth: 7-3-3 in A
Tenor: 9-3-19 in G 39.63" dia
You can also listen to the bells being rung to call changes for the first time on 29th March by going on to "You Tube" and typing in the search field "Stoke Canon Bells". The bells sound excellent and it is brilliant to see another Devon tower ringable again.

Change to Minor Final Venue and Rules Clarification
Due to an error on the side of the officers at the AGM we cannot enforce the team list rule, but we hope teams will still comply to enable us to police the existing rules more closely. Teams will still be allowed to borrow ringers at short notice as the rules allow - please inform the relevant Assistant Secretary on the day before the draw if this applies.
Also, due to unforeseen urgent repairs to the tower at Thurlestone the Minor Final will no longer be held at this location. Arrangements have been made to hold this event at Broadhempston, the date and time remain the same (2pm on May 26th 2012).
The officers would like to apologise for any confusion and inconvenience caused, and would also like to thank Julia and her team at Broadhempston for stepping at short notice. -
Okehampton Deanery Annual Meeting.
On Friday 16th March the Okehampton Deanery held its annual meeting at the Church House South Tawton. Ten towers were represented.
Officers elected were Chairman, Chris Clayton. Secretary, Karen Squire. Treasurer, Julia Endacott.
The Secretary read the minutes and after the Chairman had reported and thanked Lydford for running a very successful competition last year, the Treasurer declared a healthy balance sheet.
Most of the meeting was taken up discussing what to do about the annual competition which is held on the first Sat in June and which this year is the Jubilee Day.
After much discussion a vote was taken to defer this years competition, as moving it to a fresh date was not an easy option.
The meeting closed with prayers at 8pm.

A new invitation competition
A new 8 bell invitation competition is being proposed by Widecombe in the Moor. The intention is to have the faults from two towers, Widecombe in the Moor and Buckland in the Moor, added together to find the final result. The team with the least overall faults wins the Pascoe Memorial Cup for that year.
Some rules below are being proposed and Mike Pascoe is open to ideas and asks for suggestions.
This will be an invitation competition and time slots allocated.
The teams must represents a ringing tower. There is no restriction on the number of bells in the tower that is to be represented. For example, teams from towers with 5 or 6 bells will be eligible to enter.
Ringers will only be able to ring once, at each tower. This is to encourage as many ringers as is possible to have the opportunity to ring in the competition.
The peal to be rung will be as rung for the Devon Association 8 Bell competition including a rise and fall and ringing shall last for at least 20 minutes.
The competition is to be held annually and for 2012 the proposal is 24 March. The competition is to be held in the afternoon and not expected to last into the evening. Refreshements will be available.
The above rules are proposals at this stage, and any teams interested, and any comments, please contact Mike Pascoe by email or telephone. You can also contact him from this website, go to homepage>Tower Information.
